Grapes are known to have many health and medicinal value
The nutritional value of grapes has been known by many cultures for thousands of years. Egyptians enjoyed grapes at least 6,000 years ago, and several ancient Greek philosophers praised the healing power of grapes; however, this was usually in the form of wine. Grape leaves were used to stop bleeding, inflammation and pain. Traditionally the round, ripe, sweet grapes, was used to treat a range of health problems. Seedless varieties have now been developed to appeal to consumers, but researchers are now discovering that many of the health properties of grapes may actually come from the seeds themselves. More and more new scientific discoveries are showing light to the wonders of grape seeds and its significant antioxidant properties. Together with tannins, poly-phenols and polyunsaturated fatty acids, these seed constituents display inhibitory activities against several experimental disease models, including cancer, heart failure and other disorders of oxidation stress. Grape seed extract is loaded with antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that help protect the body from cellular damage caused by free radicals. The body needs antioxidants because with every breath you take you generate free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive substances that attack and damage cells contributing to premature aging and disease. Therefore, grape seed supplements can serve as a good source of supplemental antioxidants. Flavonoids found in grape seed extract inhibit atherosclerosis, arterial hardening, and catechins reduce the formation of histamines, giving grape seed extract antiallergenic properties. Flavonoids like proanthocyanidins also promote apoptosis. A study at the University of Kentucky in 2009 stated that research showed patients exposed to grape seed extract diminished the leukemia cells by 76 percent within 24 hours. One other of the grape's hidden health weapons is also worth a mention: it's called resveratrol. This chemical is found primarily in the skin and seeds, particularly in muscadine grapes, and it confers a number of beneficial effects to the body. They have an ability to help the brain and its processes work efficiently. Grape seed extract is used to treat cardiovascular conditions, filled blood sugar, automate the Talmud of cancer and for skin wounds. It may also be effective in treatment varicose veins and arthritis. Besides, grape seed extract is used in cosmetic medicines and grape seed oil is high in vitamin E. New findings have shown that an extract from grape seeds is capable of destroying leukemia cells by forcing them to commit undergo programmed cells death.
